If you halve image resolution, does file size halve too?

Reducing width and height cuts the pixel count much faster, but the final file size still depends on image content and compression.

Key point

Halving both width and height leaves one quarter of the pixels, not one half. File size, however, rarely becomes exactly one quarter.

50% width × 50% height means 25% of the pixels

A 4000×3000 image has 12 million pixels; 2000×1500 has 3 million. Pixel count is based on area, not on one dimension.

Why file size does not follow the same ratio

JPG and WebP compress patterns between nearby pixels. Noise, texture, color variation and quality settings change compression efficiency, so pixel count and file size are not proportional.

Choose resolution from the final use

Profile images, thumbnails, slides and web banners need different dimensions. If the source is far larger than the display area, resizing is usually the first useful step.

Resizing and compression do different jobs

Resizing changes how many pixels exist; compression changes how those pixels are stored. Treating them separately makes oversized files easier to diagnose.
